You chose to straighten your teeth with Invisalign clear aligners in Bothell, WA because you wanted to enjoy the benefits of convenient, comfortable orthodontic treatment suited for adults. Now, you’re wearing them daily as instructed, and you can’t wait to see the final results!

But there is a little maintenance required with your Invisalign aligners. You will ideally wear them at least 22 hours a day—removing them only for meals and oral hygiene—and bacteria can collect on your teeth even when you're wearing your aligners. Keeping your aligners clean benefits your oral health and has the added benefit of keeping your breath fresh.

Steps for Keeping Invisalign Aligners Clean

Here are a few helpful tips from your dentist in Kirkland, WA for keeping your clear aligners in good condition:

  • Clean Invisalign aligners when you brush and floss in the morning and before you go to sleep. Don’t use toothpaste because it’s abrasive and can damage them. Instead, clean them gently with a soft-bristled brush and rinse them thoroughly with water.
  • It’s a good idea to soak your aligner trays for about 30 minutes every day while you’re having a meal. That way, they aren’t out of your mouth for any longer than necessary.
  • During the brief periods when you take your aligners out for oral hygiene or for a big event like a wedding or reunion, be sure to store them in their case to protect them from bacteria.

Always brush your teeth after a meal and before putting Invisalign trays back in to avoid trapping food particles and bacteria under your aligners
